Local Heroes are members of our community who go above and beyond the call of duty to exhibit a true act of selflessness; their heroic acts embody the principles and ideals of the American Red Cross’ humanitarian mission to provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Local Heroes selected will include those who have assisted others during an emergencies situation, as well as those who live their everyday lives as heroes by helping those in need. These brave individuals will be nominated by the public and later selected by a panel of community leaders. AWARD CATEGORIES AND SELECTION CRITERIAEach of the 5 Local Hero Awards is presented to an individual who, over the past year, displayed (an event) or displays (ongoing) courage through any of the following:· personal acts of caring above and beyond normal expectations· public awareness raising or educational programs above and beyond normal expectationsIf the act is for courage in the face of an emergency or disaster situation, the nominee cannot have caused or contributed to the incident itself.The nominee must live or work in one of the following southwestern New Mexico Counties: Catron, Grant, Luna, Hidalgo, Sierra, Doña Ana, or Otero. We congratulate all our Local Heroes and thank their sponsors for helping us to honor these members of our community who exhibit "The Spirit of the Red Cross."
